lo popped in

speaking of music, how i miss jason lo. i was listening to one of my faves from his songs, "end of the universe", n i was thinking, sigh...wish there were more jason lo CDs around. all i noe is i didn't bring enough quid on the nite i met him at the world peace concert n after that i never saw the CDs anywhere else....except at genting highlands...when i went self-shopping, becos i was very bored n i wanted to see if there was any chance of a bookstore being found there (went round the whole of first world btw....no bookstore. love the bowling though...but it got me broke. i recall it was too cold n foggy for the outdoor rides to work then).

i actually had a bunch of his songs on my comp, until my pc guy reformatted this pc....n totally wiped out all the songs this pc has. n that was before i had a thumb drive....so i had no chance to save anything. so some songs were gone...including lo's. heard he got married in penang last year....i don't even see him on tv anymore. think he's taken a break from latte@8 for now. man i wud've given anything to go to starbucks at sunway pyramid at 12 every nite jus to see him again. but ah well...parents.

pain

it's like this vicious cycle: pain. if ur not feeling it, someone u care about is, n that makes the pain spread to u since u share pain. how painful is that? i hate this agonising road...thank god i'm not feeling the "shared" pain too badly now becos of certain reasons, but still....how many times has my heart bled becos of someone else in pain....i mean it's bad enough if u've got pain of ur own, but when u've had some temporary relief, all it takes is to look for someone near u to be in pain n u've got the cycle running all over again.

oh well...changing the subject, my fren smsed me yesterday bout the quake in indonesia. he was in sing n he felt the tremors at 12plus...interesting news i guess....i immediately turned on the tv n s'pore, being the efficient city that it is, was already showing this on the news. latest i heard just now, death toll was at 200+ ppl.

when i heard bout it i thot it was a bad thing but kinda cool at the same time...to feel the tremors i mean. i never felt them, but i half-wished i had...but then again if i actually did, the quake wud've been worse for it to reach this far. n it actually got me thinking bout the end of the world. again. n as i flipped idly thru the pages of my bible i came across revelations n i started reading, just like that.

this, coming from a person who fears death n has been trying to avoid certain books in the bible like revelations becos they remind her of bad or painful things. but then again, He is renewing my mind everyday. up till a few mths ago i cudn't even (mentally) look at blood on the cross. but now i confront it...and i block it out no longer. er, but that's not to say i still don't flinch at the sight of blood or operations or hospitals....[shudder] i think i better not remind myself.

pain. pain pain pain. the christian life was never easy. but sometimes all u hope for is paradise. peace, no worries, no thinking about pain...and death. n i guess, not having to worry about the ppl u care about. "and god will wipe away the tears from their eyes...." christ is coming. the day is drawing nearer becos evil is intensifying. it will all come to an end...soon. but like god told me before, i don't have to wait till the end of the world to die. i could go anytime soon. nope, not dropping any hints here bout wanting to die....i'm jus saying life is fragile. n my thoughts are wandering. which is why my main point's not clear today. i'm feeling sleepy....aigh.

topic change....(cos what can u do by dwelling on pain?)...songs currently stuck in my head: "ode to chin" by switchfoot and "paint the silence" by south. both for different reasons. the former, becos it's encouraging, the latter, cos it reminds me of good times...oklah n it reminds me of the episode in the O.C. from which this song came from. eheheh...but both songs are definitely good to listen to...catchy tunes in different genres. (btw listen to south on their website...it has a background player)

"grow, grow where you are
anchor your roots underneath;
doubt your doubts
and believe your beliefs."
-ode to chin, by switchfoot (it was an ode to their great friend chin, whom they viewed as a very faithful christian...in fact their whole album is named after him n has baby pics of him...ahaha...yes i'm talking bout "legend of chin").

there and back again

being a true-blue lotr fan, i saw the fellowship of the ring on tv on sun n mon....all parts were very memorable...n all the emotional parts, n the parts where the good struggle with the desires of the ring, or where it was the ringwraiths versus the good guys......reminded me even more so of this life. how this is a spiritual battle we fight everyday, good versus evil, how there is more than what our eyes see, how we are prone to greedily or lustily fulfilling the desires of our hearts (the ring) if left alone, without a samwise gamgee (god) to stop us, how evil (ringwraiths) is always on our tail, n how we have to flee from it, or overcome evil with good / the light and truth (gandalf's light-wielding staff).

gandalf fighting the balrog, n that great monumental scene where he says for one heart-stopping moment, "You...shall not...PASS!!" hints of a biblical reference embedded in it. yup, was thinking of moses. n my current fave verse: exodus 14:14 (see previous posts). yeah, thank clay aiken (partly) for that ;).

n of cos who can forget the scene where gandalf sits with frodo in the mines of moria n says, "you can only decide what to do with the time that is given to you," in response to frodo's words of "i wish the ring had never come to me." oh, how we all sense that our feelings are embedded in frodo's cry of regret at some point or another. n here is god, encouraging us n giving us a hope that will never fade away.

also saw the O.C. season 2 on sun nite on 8tv....very very happy to see it, since s'pore tv doesn't have it yet....wanted to find out what happened after that cliffhanger where ryan made teresa pregnant while having jus got back with marissa. apparently, a lot has happened. seth left for portland the day ryan left for chino (to look after teresa n the baby)......but in the end teresa lies n says she had a miscarriage (her mom told her to n said it's for the best.....what the?), n ryan's under pressure to come home...so ryan n seth come back home to their parents in the Orange County n it ends there. n meanwhile marissa has been drowning her sorrows in wine and in the company of seth's ex, summer.

n now it is time for me to take my bow n leave or i wil never get ard to doing it.....haven't finished editing my advertising notes yet....cos the teacher's notes are, like i said, big boring chunks of words. and before i forget, it's good friday tomoro. my cf teacher last time used to say there'd always be a rainbow every good friday or sth great like that.....so keep a lookout for it tmr.

anger management

it's nearly 2 and i am at the scene of the crime where an incident of incited violence just took place. yeah, my dad jus started throwing things around again after all my shouting woke him up. it's always like that. i jus got out of the bath, n my stupid brother was still up at the pc, n i had to retrieve the tissue box in the dining room to wipe my face becos the tissue in my room ran out, n as usual my brother refused to either move or take it from me.

why can't i take it myself? well, when u have a sicko who still thinks it's funny to look under the hem of ppl's towels n torment girls while at the same time totally denying that he likes girls, u'll know why. so i was yelling at him to take it for me or move away, n of cos my dad woke up n blew his top. the reason why i mention this incident is: it jus occured to me, i seem to have been subconsiously modelling my dad as of late, in the area of anger.

no, i don't throw things around (thank god i stopped that a long time ago), but i do lose my cool and have been easily provoked, esp saturday (read my previous post). i was jus reviewing my life again earlier after dinner tonite n i was jus telling myself how much i needed to control / manage my anger better, n i was wondering how i ended up like this....and then it jus hit me a few mins ago that i mite have been following my dad without knowing.

there is a theory i learnt 3 semesters ago (that jus reappeared again tonite as i studied) called Social Learning Theory, n it's proposed by this old guy Bandura that ppl tend to model some of the behaviours of others, kinda like a "monkey see, monkey do" thing. n i think that's what i've been doing half my life in terms of dealing with anger. but i noe that's no excuse.

when i'm aware of it, i try to stop it, but lately these past few wks i've realised that when the testing for anger comes, i jus let my anger go where it takes me. i mean, i'm not totally out of control, but i do feel that i've been harbouring it more and not handling it as well as i used to. so once again i am, like i mentioned in my older posts, going backwards again, or at least aiming to. to go back to a time where i was...a better christian. more trusting of god, less dependent on ephemeral things.

btw, i especially enjoyed the company yesterday at my favourite old coffee house....the good old starbucks jb. i packed in a whole lot more hours of attentive studying there than i wud have done at a noisier coffee house. but i also had a leg cramp after that....found it hard to walk ard after that, haha. also found another comfy place to study at lavazza coffee aka. vivo....cheaper drinks, just-as-comfy seats, great rooftop view. today, was not able to go there again, so ended up studying in a slightly chilly coffee place.

animals, songs n more

i'm finally listening to that song my friend keeps singing for the past 3 wks...(yes, steph, i've given in...haha)....but though it sounds nice (soft n pleasant to the ear), the lyrics are rather sad....

"i walk a lonely street,
the only one that i have ever known.
don't know where it goes,
but it's home to me and i walk alone"

yup, it's "boulevard of broken dreams" by Green Day. think if i listen to it too often it's gonna make me blue....so i'll try not to. haha. btw most of sarah mclachlan's songs make feel miserable. haha. which is why i try not to listen to them.

n before i forget, i bought a new fighting fish last sunday nite at carrefour. i dunno how...but my brother was just talking about getting one on the way there n before i knew it, i bought it. actually at the time of purchase, i was thinking in my mind that maybe i needed to handle more responsibility in my life. i'm like the guardian / co-owner of the fish, but for now my bro's the main owner...i'm jus there jus in case he gets sick of it n starts to neglect it. i noe, strange rite? me, getting along with my brother? me, buying a fish out of nowhere? but then again i am a very impulsive person.

on one hand, that's good, cos it's made me jump headfirst into the things i'm supposed to do without letting fear convict me first, n it's benefited me in that sense cos i've realised it's not so bad once i've done it, but on the other hand, i do stupid things without a rational head, things that i regret later....stuff like....well, not stuff that leads me into sin, but stuff that...messes things up.

[btw, i did own a fighting fish years ago, n so did my bro, but both of ours jumped to their deaths a year later, due to unclosed glass ovaltine jars of water. but i was more careful with mine...until one day i wasn't able to watch it anymore. i remember pestering my mom to go and get a cover with holes for air to enter, but she's the type of person that doesn't care about these things. n the next thing i knew is, he had jumped out the next morning. i cudn't find him amidst the dusty mess of boxes n things my mom put beside the table, which was where the jar was, n my mom didn't even like, care. i remember feeling really bitter when she finally found him there, all coated in dust, three days later. but oh well. my mom didn't even allow me to go near my old dog daisy when she lay there dying in the backyard, and it's always killed me that i was not able to be there when she called for me. i still feel sometimes like i can never forgive myself, but thankfully i don't feel this so often anymore.

this sunday, "ah patch" (my mom called him that becos of his brown patches over his white body, dun ask what's with the "ah"), our hse's latest stray puppy-dog, just got bundled up in a car n taken away....hopefully by a dog owner that cares. so it's a happy ending (i hope) to yet another homeless dog who has lived outside our hse. n after i learnt of that, this thought jus came to mind: come to think of it, almost every stray dog that has lived outside our hse has found a home. i think it's something to do God in our hse.

wait, i know it's god. starting from the first stray dog, this yellow ocre-coloured dog called "brownie" (my mom is jus plain fond of giving dogs names, even the stray ones), started living outside our gates. like all our stray dogs that made our gates a home, he depended on us and the neighbour across the road for meals, n always treated us like we were the owners -- he'd bark when our car came home, he'd jump around when we got out of the car, n he'd even accompany us for walks whenever we went walking ard the neighbourhood. at first it was ok, but after a few months (i can't rem, but i do recall that it was an overstay) it sorta became too long.

not that we wanted to kick him out, but the dog-catchers in malaysia are ever-ready to kill dogs n put them to sleep. (in fact last month there was this new straits times article of some MBJB [jb town council] ppl coming by someone's hse when the person wasn't ard n clubbing the poor toy dog to death jus for the fun of it). so of course it was risky for brownie to be living outside our gates, as we are all dog lovers and we didn't want to see him end in a terrible death. there's another reason to but you'll have to ask me.

so i started praying for brownie to find a home. i dunno who else in my family prayed, but within one month's time or so, the neighbour at the corner shack a few roads away kept him in a doggie cage (they do that to all their other dogs too anyway) n started feeding him there n taking him in. they don't keep the dogs forever in cages, only at certain times, but most of the time they let the dogs out n since their shack has no gates, they let them roam all over the neighbourhood. these days sometimes my parents will purposely drive by to see brownie, n even if we don't, he still pops by once in a while jus to say hi to us.

happy ending number 2 was when the next dog, blackie (self-explanatory name) started being our resident stray. the only clear problem with blackie was that he was always looking for ways to get into ppl's houses. for us, we were always present to guard the gate when we got our car in, but for the neighbour across the street, not so. so it was not uncommon to find blackie sleeping inside the gates of our neighbour, only to be discovered and chased out later. but one day last yr a blessing came in disguise: the neighbour's hse got robbed.

i thank god the neighbour n her family were unharmed. but immediately after that, they took in blackie. n yes, now we see him sleeping with permission inside their gates every day. n now "ah patch" is gone...hopefully to ppl that care. my aunty was gonna take him in anyway...i heard she even came yesterday n my parents tried to find it but they cudn't, n then the neighbour told them what happened.

and saturday was...eventful. i learned new things in my walk with god. but in my impulsiveness i did a few things which, though did not cause that much damage, are things that i cud've...handled better. but i did find help in god, directly n indirectly. n i did get surprised...i wudn't say pleasantly, but i did feel comforted, n it immediately led my thoughts to christ. anyway thank god He's working it all out.

meanwhile i've got 2 exams left to go, i haven't studied yet...i've only jus been trying to collate my notes cos i've chucked them everywhere in my room. they look like a whole ton to study....and the advertising notes look extremely boring...jus whole big chunks of wordy paragraphs that look like they wanna bore you to death. media research notes don't really help either....i don't know how to calculate a chi-square, pearson's r, or whatever other confusing stuff they have in there. the formulas look like greek to me....and i think they literally are, if you count alpha, beta and delta as greek.

also, i haven't really got down to being serious about funding for my mission trip.....i need to raise $350 sing, which means that's more than twice the RM notes, before the trip, which is on 9-20 may in some student centre in singapore. anyone wanna chip in? email or call me.

i knew it

i knew it. somebody jus had to ruffle my feathers n ruin my mood. i stick to my sentence when i say groupwork is really challenging....i cannot understand how someone can be so thick as to not even know what is going on n therefore not hand in anything.

seriously. n this is not the first time she has misunderstood such a simple menial task to do. it's like she wants our group to fail or sth, by not handing in what she's supposed to hand in to me. today relly is the last straw. i'm not as super duper pissed as i was jus a few mins ago, cos thank god He set the agenda for me again (the agenda of thinking in terms of eternity n not in the here n now).

what happened earlier was...ok, i had to leave earlier to attend the planet shakers concert thingy (which was...ok lah. nothing spectacular...but i definitely felt god there)...i even left late summore (n arrived one hr late), jus so i cud stay as long as i cud with the grp. i told her specifically, i wud drop by her hse to pick up what she's supposed to send me (i cudn't jus grab it in sch cos the rest of the grp was working on it). after the concert, i stand like pretty near her hse, n i find out she's not even home. she thot i meant i wud come another day. hello, i said later, which part did she not understand? n even if she wasn't listening to me, didn't she even hear what our grp leader said about us handing in the thing tomoro? (it's not due tmr but the leader wanted to hand it in early)

ok. fine. at that time i wasn't boiling. i only got mad when i got home. i jus said, email me ok? i said i wud call if i didn't it. she said ok. n yup, u guessed it. i come back real late, cos the planet shakers place is pretty far away, n i check my email n it's totally empty. i call her for like the 100th time n she doesn't pick up. at that time all my anger just burst open like a bulging dam. n that one expletive, which i have a problem getting rid of all my life, jus shot out of me a bunch of times today. i think it's cos i heard it being said in sch again today a few times so i cudn't get it out of my mind (it's a weak tendency i have). n i jus started getting madder n madder.

honestly, i think i called her 10 times or around there. n of cos, she never picked up. n how are we supposed to hand it in tmr if i haven't even gotten to add my part of the work into it yet?

after boiling with anger n feeling the physical symptoms i feel when i'm angry start to manifest themselves in small scale, i decided this had to stop. so i went to god.....n as i poured out my anger i asked him a whole buncha questions which he answered, one of which is how to stop being so angry. n then he reminded me again of thinking in terms of eternity. n that was the thing that put it all into perspective....i mean, when i go to heaven god's not gonna assess me based on how much i got for this grp assignment....he's gonna ask me how many souls have i helped save? have i been using His talents n not wasting them? have i glorified him with my life?

after that, the fire of anger got extinguished. it rose again as i typed the above but it's gone now again as i remember god's agenda. it's like what i wrote the other day....being content with not-so-good marks, n being willing to leave behind even good marks to follow god. yawn. presentation tmr n my other grp's meeting up beforehand to practice....which means i have to go even earlier than my already early class tmr.

contented or pacified?

before i go off, this is one of my favourite songs in the "absent friends" album, becos i always feel contented (or just pacified for now?) after listening to it....it has an old-school charm to it, esp the beginning of those mellow sounds of an oldish-sounding piano at the beginning of the track. btw, here neil (the one who wrote this) is writing about the joy / contention of having his first child, so don't get the wrong idea when u read the lyrics.

Charmed Life
by THE DIVINE COMEDY

When I hold you in my arms
And look back on my charmed life, my charmed life,
I hope, I hope if nothing more
That one day you'll call your life a charmed life,
A charmed life.

Well I've never really worried that much
About making lots of money and such
And I always seem to land upon my feet.
And though there's been some difficult times
The good times were never far behind.
I've snatched all of my victories from the jaws of defeat.

When I hold you in my arms
And look back on my charmed life, my charmed life,
I hope, baby I hope if nothing more
That one day you'll call your life a charmed life,
A charmed life.

Well the course of true love never ran smooth.
They broke my heart and I broke theirs too,
And breaking up is so very hard to do.
But I knew I'd find the one,
And sure enough she came along,
And not long after that along came you.

Well sometimes this life is like being afloat
On a raging sea in a little row-boat,
Just trying not to be washed overboard.
But if you take your chances and you ride your luck,
And you never, never, never, never, never give up
Those waves will see you safely to a friendly shore.

When I hold you in my arms
I know that this is a charmed life,
A charmed life.

short solitude

today i had a short spurt of ... peace n "okayness" for awhile during this spell of....[u fill in the blanks here urself]. why? cos today me n my parents watched a movie without even fighting. everything about my last sentence is rare. becos,
1) if u'd read my previous posts, my family n i don't mix very well
2) my parents are not even the type to go for movies...they're conservative bout these things
3) usually my mom loves to criticise every movie n count out its flaws

and hey, all 3 didn't even manifest themselves today. miraculous or wad.....i took them to see "a series of unfortunate events". i had actually seen the thing on monday...if u checked my previous posts, it was the day mr. no-show came by, so i decided to offer some sort of consolation to myself by going for the movie. i was in orchard anyway so the temptation was too much to bear (hehe).

cos u see, i'm a big fan of the book series.....in fact i stumbled upon Count Olaf's blog becos it was in the list of freshly-posted blogs back in...sept or oct last yr? when i saw the title "olaf unleashed" in the list, i knew i had to take a look, cos the first person i thot of was, who else. so i'd been following the blog, n a bunch of their official websites (they've got quite a number for the movie n book) which slated the release of the movie for christmas day in the US. saw the trailer when it appeared on their site....n eagerly anticipated this movie.

i must say i thoroughly enjoyed the show, even watching it twice, n the twist at the ending felt just as touching as when i first saw it, though this time i held back my tears since my dad was next to me (hehe). another thing that's rare: i don't usually go near my dad, much less even speak to him. it's...complicated....u'll have to ask me when u see me.

yesterday i so dearly wanted to blog, but my aunt n her kid daughter from penang came over (i didn't even noe til yesterday before i left for my 8am class), so it's not like i had privacy, cos this home pc is in the dining room, n my laptop has no internet access since i'm using broadband (the connections here r different from the sch's one n my pc guy says not to mess with it).

wanted to say that...my grpwork thing....well, every day comes with fresh problems, but so far thru prayer they've been...not so bad as my last post. n who else but god to thank. i am also very grateful when i was reminded recently that i actually do have a network of faithful friends who do pray / intercede for me, n if ur one of them n ur reading this now, i'd like to say a big heartfelt thank you. likewise, let me noe what to pray for u n i will.

anyway, this is my last wk of sch. presentations n assignments due...right until friday, but none as packed n as...jammed into one day like last wk's, n most of the parts are already done up earlier on in the sem (cos it's a compilation kinda thing), so there's less rushing of things at the eleventh hour, which i totally hate doing, becos i am the type of person who cannot remain calm / not stressed under pressure.

next wk i've got sth due on wed as well, then a one-wk break, n then two exams the following week....n then i'm off scott-free, getting the break i deserve. thank god i did my attachment last sem...i can't imagine working continuously after how stressful this sem has been.....i think i'd die. haha.

speaking of which, it was pretty fun to do my attachment n have meta at the same time, likewise for starting my first wk of sch the same time as the 2nd meta last yr. i relly liked coming "home" early, not having to travel so long just to reach home....n other benefits, which i mentioned in my earlier posts ard that time. i still remember every now and then of how much i enjoyed that time (esp the coming home early part). sigh...how nice it wud be if i cud stay in nus instead of having to travel all the way back home everyday. but enuff of that. i have a lot to be grateful for.

mad about grpwork

*i decided to edit this, n take out some parts after leaving it here for awhile (so i guess it's a bonus if u read my blog everyday, cos u'd have had this small window of time to view it...haha) for very duh reasons.

ah....i wait for the day when they say, no more groupwork! but alas, that will never happen. everywhere, every point in ur life, u'll encounter groupwork. and shitty characters to boot....most of them.

as u can tell, i am currently pissed rite now. jus got back and found that whoever who's supposed to send me stuff to do totally bypassed me and sent it to the one above me. therein lies the problem. seriously, the person above me is really....unprofessional in that person's job conduct.

whatever lah. all i noe is, working in a group is...challenging. all i can do is pray and ask god to help me. how will he do it? either he'll change me or he'll change the ppl that i'm working with, as in change ppl internally. or maybe both. sigh....

last week god was testing me on being content with....not-so-good marks. it was relly trying...but i relly felt like he was challenging my statement, my conviction when i said that i was willing to leave everything behind for him. are you willing to leave behind good marks even though it's not because u slacked or didn't do ur work? i could hear Him say. it cud be that he is asking that of me now.

like that switchfoot song i heard below, "all that's in my head is in Your hands". jon (the songwriter) cudn't be more clearer. and yes, switchfoot was on repeat mode when i was in the bus today.

It's a long way from
Miami to LA
It's a longer way from
yesterday
To where I am today

It's a long way from my
thoughts to what I'll say
It's a long, long way
from paradise
to where I am today

All that's in my head is in
Your hands

It's a long way from the
moon up to the sun
It's a longer road
ahead of me,
the road that I've begun

Stop to think of all the
time that I've lost
Start to think of all the
bridges that I've burned
that must be crossed

Over, over, over
Take me over

I've been poison
I've been rain
I've been fooled again

I've seen ashes
shine like chrome
Someday I'll see home

Home, home

I can see the stars from way down here
But I can't fall asleep behind the wheel

It's a long way from the
shadows in my cave
up to Your reality to
watch the sunlight
taking me over

Over, over
Taking over
Take me over

I've been poison
I've been rain
I've been fooled again

I've seen ashes
shine like chrome
Someday I'll see home

All that's in my head is in
Your hands
If it's in my head it's in
Your hands
If it's in my head it's in
Your hands

It's in Your hands....

note: "Home" here refers to heaven....yes, how my spirit groans to reach its destination sometimes, because we know we're all pilgrims here on earth. but if there's anything good i've learned thru pain, it's that at least my focus is on what is right and my thoughts, though thoughts of unhappiness (if that's even the right word for it...i was looking for the opposite of "happy"), are pure.

today's recap

yawn. it's nearly 5 and i just finished some subbing and part of my ad plan. thank god no sch tomoro.

why so late? becos, yup, u guessed it....groupwork. it gets especially trying when ur a middleman and you come across this situation: assume everyone has a sort of ranking system or a sort of vertical-level chain for ppl to pass work thru, instead of doing the whole thing together. if you're in the middle, the ppl below u are supposed to hand u their work, after which u will go thru their work n edit / add to it, n then send it to the ppl/person above u. but of cos what happens is the ppl below u don't hand in their work, n then the ppl/person above u is waiting for u to hand something in, but u can't becos u don't even have the foundation work to begin with. what do u do?

do u wait till the 12th of never for the ppl below u to do sth about it, or do u "bo chap siau" and jus do the whole bulk of it yourself so the ppl/person above u can get started on work, for the benefit of the grp? in the past, most of the time i ended up doing the latter. but lately, i feel it's relly not worth my time and effort to do a whole ton of work that other ppl r supposed to do. so that leaves me with another option: continue to persevere and become a temporary stalker-cum-human pager for as long as it takes. but the thing is, it's not that easy. it doesn't always work.

so in the end, as a final resort, i either save my ass and bring everyone along on the ride to satisfiably good marks, or i refuse to do extra work n in the end the whole grp suffers with crappy marks. i've done both this sem....n both don't feel good at all. but such is the nature of this line of work....one thing seems to work wonders sometimes though....it's the power of prayer. but if there's anything this sem has taught me (n it's taught me a lot), it's that thru all things, the grace god gives is...sufficient enough to get through, with a little more to spare. how little? it depends...but there's always a little.

oh great. 5am. in one hr's time i'm gonna hear the muezzin in the mosque howling away, n then my dogs are all gonna howl in unison. i think they think he's a big great dog in the sky, that comes on in the early hours of the morning and 4 times later on in the day. hahaha. no offence btw.

today what that old reverend guy in church said was rather relevant. i'm not sure if i got the name right, but the announcer said that Reverend John Good was here with us today and that "he is an old friend of ours", meaning the church. when he came up to speak after the announcer asked him to say a few words, he mentioned somewhere that he's nearly 90...so i guess he must've been ard when our church got newly founded.

anyway this is what he said....he said that in his old age, he found that friendships are really worth treasuring n he found that particularly so when some of his friends have passed on into the richer life beyond. n then he went on to say that it was said that the apostle john, when he was nearly 90 and was asked to deliver a sermon, merely said "love one another", n how jesus said "this sums up the law and all the prophets", that is, to love god n love one another (i'm paraphrasing cos i wanna sleep soon) n he said he found that relly important because friendships are the greatest expression of how much love we can give to others.

hmm, i agree. but (and this was the agenda on my mind the whole day), what if they don't last? it pains me everytime to see a close friendship with someone die off or go into hibernation for some time before being awakened, if ever. i was asking this question to myself earlier tonite: do friendships have some kind of expiry date or something? because what seems to happen is, we either drift apart somehow, or one of us has to go further their studies somewhere too far away to visit or call. n then it gets awakened, for like, a short amount of time, either when they come back for the hols, or when the other party suddenly feels like it, n then they're gone again n suddenly all u have is outdated snapshots of their lives in your memory banks.

it's not an easy thing to accept when these so-called "potential" long-lasting friendships turn sour or go cold for some time....it made me wonder again tonite, as i've wondered before, then isn't it better not to be too close to anyone in the future cos u noe they're most probably gonna drift away in the end? but, as my friend reminded me today, friendship is a risk....n if i don't take the chance, there won't even be a possibility that there'll even be a close friendship in the first place. it's just that....sometimes i just think it's so....wasted, the could-have-beens and the potentials.

then u think, oh, would it have worked out if i did this, this and this? but god always has an almost immediate answer that comes to my mind for that one: i'll never know how it's gonna turn out anyway, so it's not like i can steer myself in the right direction because i don't even know what the right direction is.

n i get relly irritated when the other party asks me questions i've already answered....it shows they're not listening, or they care so little enough about who they're speaking to that they forget about it after the conversation ends. cos i mean, logically speaking, the ppl on the top of ur list, u'd remember what they do and vital things about them...the recent ones.

another thing that irks me is.... when there is a breakdown of communication, as in it's not even communication at all, in the literal sense. or to put it more clearly, when it becomes one-sided. it's during those times when i feel, heck, i might as well be talking to the wall and i think even the wall can give me more answers. for me i feel it must be mutual, or i'll feel rather betrayed, exposing my weaknesses and not hearing the same thing from the other side in return. hey, even the confession box can do that for me: go to a stranger and tell all my problems...not that i've ever been in a confession box anyway, though i've been to something similar.

n another thing that relly annoys me is when the other side starts opposing u instead of accepting u for who u are. it says in the bible, who are we to judge our fellow brothers and sisters? everyone grows at different rates (or something like that)....but i hate it when they don't realise it, when they start to see me thru tainted eyes and come up with all kinds of conclusions about me that are merely just unfair assumptions made on vision alone (added with their own personal bias of what a person shud be like).

gtg now. the dogs are howling

pressure-cooker

hmm...events....last wk was....a few surprises, besides your usual melancholy fare. this wk it's.....super duper busy. 6 projects due, 3 due on fri, frantic rushes for grp meetings that don't always go well....and for one of the projects, it looks like i'm gonna fail...i'm gonna find out more bout it tmr....and the worst part is, it's not even my fault. it's a group project gone wrong...talk about choosing the wrong partners to work with. well, not all of them deserve the blame for our downfall....but it's really sad that because of some of them, the whole group goes down with them. i don't wanna fail advertising! wahaha.....[that's tears btw, not laughter]

but i think somehow i'll pass the module, even if i fail this project. hopefully my individual marks will be able to make up for it. and for another project, i have totally no idea how to go about doing it....and it's due friday! grp project...the teacher is very vague, and she's very...erm, insecure, so no one dared ask her something as rude-sounding (to her sensitive mind) as "can you tell us how to do this assignment?"....oh well. relying on classmates is, er...i dunno lar. so far from what they've told me, i don't really follow them. i only understand halfway. must relly pray....we're meeting up tmr for a full nite, which i might end up staying over for, i dunno, so hopefully tmr we'll get to sort things out.

as for yet another project, wahahaha....i can't seem to find an interviewee for my radio test, because it's during a time when everyone else has classes. i need anybody, somebody, please! actually i found someone, who erm, is doing it because he stood me up on monday for two fricking hours and in the end became a no-show, but he did the "broken promises" act again today so i'm really beginning to doubt his...reliability. who's to say he won't turn up on time during my test? but i can't seem to get anyone else...i'm still looking and looking, praying for an answer to show up.

and yes, as u can guess from the bold print, i was pretty pissed at being stood up...becos to make things worse, class got cancelled so i ended a bit early, which means i waited so much longer in sch....n then finally he tells me he can't make it, after confirming with me previously that he could. it was relly....trying....to practice christlikeness and not swear and practice forgiveness. and the thing is, i was relly disappointed in him....becos i hadn't expected a person of his...calibre to do something as inconsiderate like that. but oh well...gotta constantly be reminded that nobody's perfect all the time.

and today, well well well, of all days i just had to stub my toe and cut the skin and chip part of my toenail off while climbing stairs....and i wasn't even rushing this time! i mean, at least for the other 2 times i can understand cos (1) i was late for class and (2) i was rushing, but today i totally wasn't....but i think it had something to do with my sleepiness. i had the usual stupid early class today, so i had to get up early again, and the nite before i was up late doing work that cud've been done had i not been stood up (ok ok i'll get over it already), so naturally i was tired enough to warrant a deep sleep in the bus.

no, i did not wake up on dunearn road this time, which is what happens when you oversleep and miss your stop, but i admit my eyes were rather out of focus and blurry when i stumbled out of the bus. i climbed the stairs up, as usual, and i think i must've missed a step, cos my foot slipped, and my sandals tripped me up....and then i fell forward. thank god no cuts elsewhere, and thank god i didn't fall backward, where, if i did, i might not be sitting here today typing this, but still....the skin near my toe started bleeding. the only aid was the self-service first aid kit at the student centre. and the only thing they had for cuts was some iodine-coloured thing.

good thing i brought my nail clipper...i bought it last year when i found my fingernails were constantly getting chipped from being in unfortunate situations (and crashing your hands hard on the piano each week doesn't help either, but i'm not complaining cos that's my ministry)....so today i used it to detach the part of the toenail which got chipped. thank god as well this time's toenail chip wasn't as bad as the last one, as in it didn't bleed even though it went a little past the cuticle.

and that was all that sustained me as i hobbled around school and lecture theatres and customs till i got back. and i got back late tonite summore...not as late as yesterday, but late enuff. sigh. i'm wondering how to get around s'pore for the next few days, esp tmr when i'm supposed to meet my grp at my fren's home which is quite a distance away from sch. it's a miracle my toenail was not smashed by someone in the bus or customs today....and i'm gonna keep praying it continues.

but i know god's testing me thru all this....and i can't say that i've passed with flying colours, but i'm learning everyday to try to work towards that...a better me, or shud i say a better model of christ. i am humbled everyday...gotta keep my ego in check anyway, cos when it pops up it relly gets in the way of things.

drifting along

having to submit or conform to someone or something sucks. i like variety and i hate monotony, which is why i hate having to bend toward the norm in terms of....preference towards certain things? and i have no choice but to be rather driven at my work, especially if i know it's gonna cost me marks if i don't, but at the same time this tends to make me look like the bad guy.

and i hate faking it, so i don't. if i feel a certain way, i won't make an effort to hide it...unless it's absolutely necessary (the exceptions of which are too vague to mention, you just have to feel it). sometimes that makes me come off as somebody i'm not....which, if one comes to think of it, is the same as faking it (because you also come off as somebody you're not too). but the key difference is that at least i'm not lying to myself, to god, to people, the most affected party of which (i feel) is myself (ok lah and god).

sometimes i tire of the noise around me because we're all fallen and my soul subconsciously longs for the perfection that can be found only in heaven. what is stopping me from meeting my Maker? my Maker Himself. for i know His work is not done yet in me and that spurs me on to continue this fragile, sometimes hypocritical life. speaking of which, i found that everyone is a hypocrite at some point or another, whether they're pastors or jesus freaks or whatever, which means there is always a chance to better oneself and learn more from the Maker.

CONCRETE GIRL
by Switchfoot

Bleeding thoughts
Cracking boulder
Don't fall over
Fake your laughter
Burn the tear
Sing it louder,
Twist and shout

Way up here
We stand on shoulders
Growing colder
Laugh or cry
I won't mind
Sing it louder,
Twist and shout

Immovable shadows
Concrete girl
They'll rock your world
To nothing
And they're swimming
Around again, again
And they're swimming
Around the concrete girl

Catch your breath
Like four leaf clover
Hand it over

Scream to no one
Take your time
Sing it louder,
Twist and shout

Nothing to run from
Is worse than something
And all your fears
Of nothing
And they're swimming
Around again, again
And they're swimming
Around the concrete girl

Concrete girl don't
Fall down
In this broken world
Around you

Concrete girl don't
Fall down
Don't fall down
My concrete girl

Don't stop thinking
Don't stop feeling

One step away
From where we were
And one step back
To nothing
And we're standing on top
Of our hopes and fears
And we're fighting
For words
Now concrete girl

And we're swimming
Around again, again
And we're swimming
Around now
Concrete girl

Concrete girl don't
Fall down
In this concrete world
Around you

Concrete girl don't
Fall down
Don't breakdown
My concrete girl

exhaustive

today started off pretty erm...not so nice lah. n it started off exhaustive too. cos was up the nite before, doing some last-minute sch work which my project mates handed to me last-minute (so it's not like i cud do it earlier cos my part depended on theirs). then today, had the 8am class....argh. which means i got up at that "insanely early" time again. i think that's like my fave cliche now when i mention 8am classes...hah. heck, i'm so tired now i can't even laugh fully.

yeah, so i got up early, but not early enuff, n there was the usual causeway jam, n it was raining so it's not like i cud get out n walk across in the rain. but praise the lord i somehow managed to wake up "early" this time, tho not at the appointed time, but early enuff to take in the time taken for the jam to clear. so i reached sch late, but at least marked "present" cos i was within the half-hour grace timing. but not before this horrible indian erm, female dog at customs called me "stupid" for ovetaking her. i mean, heck, i'm rushing for class, you're slowing me down by walking so fricking slow with your fat short podgy legs, n so i overtake you n you call me "stupid"? who's the "stupid" one here? n she was in nurse's uniform summore....eesh. i sure wudn't want her for a nurse. n it's not like she was a student or anything, she was like in her 40s n she had the balls to be mean?

but whatever. i'm trying not to get angry. actually i was about to say something back to her after she called me that, but i stopped n moved on becos...christ reminded me. not a tooth for a tooth, jess, He says. tough act to follow...but i'm glad now i'm not feeling like super angry still from that. gotta learn to forgive..somehow. or else if i go like this over every little offense done to me i mite as well die of heart disease or some sickness associated with brewing ur anger inside.

yeah, then class was the usual, n it ended early today....but sadly, i cudn't go home n sleep even tho i was already suffering from sleep deprivation, seriously. i was having like a headache, n a woozy sort of feeling, n to make matters worse someone kept wanting to talk to me when i was trying to sleep so i was getting pretty irritated, so in the end i left n K.O. -ed in the library. completely knocked out, for like, 3 hrs. i went somewhere quiet where i knew very few ppl knew off...hehehe.

when i woke up i felt so much better....n the headache was gone. why cudn't i go home early? well yesterday someone called in n said they needed a pianist for life (as in life meeting). n of all days to practice for worship they had to pick today. n they said they cudn't get the band together any other day. so no choice lor. but thank god i got my 3 hrs of sleep.....think this is a record for me, cos the most i ever slept in sch was 2 hrs before this.

then after that i had my usual chat with the Man Upstairs...n then rushed home. yeah, He's still helping me go thru some things in life.....some hurdles which i haven't completely crossed yet. like the pain of watching yourself do the opposite of what you'd rather do, because the Spirit is telling you to do otherwise. but i'm still trying to accept the life lesson of glorifying god as opposed to gratifying self. yawn. better slp now or i'l suffer tmr.

n yeah, i was listening to dc talk on the bus home n switchfoot after my bath.

growing pains (in christ)

it's been a packed past week for me. near-debarrments and nearly-failed tests. work n issues...jus filling my head.still the same this wk...but i rest in the knowledge that school is ending in 3 wks! aha! i cannot fricking wait.....but i bet everyone else says the same thing too. after all, this is supposed to be the toughest sem....but that's true, then we've made it past the hardest part and there'll jus be lighter loads of work to look for in future! :)

i dunno why but i jus feel so upbeat now....mebbe it's switchfoot's first album blasting up my ear...or mebbe i'm not thinking about my problems now...which has not always been the case. i was down....like certain times, the last one being this evening as i had my usual chat with God....but hey, at least i noe i'm growing in the Lord thru the pain, n not jus remaining stagnant in my "happy" state.

i was reminded of one thing i realised a few wks back...the thing with me is, sure, i do lay my problems down at the feet of christ, but i tend to come back and take them back again...hahaha. i can't believe i'm laughing now! i was crying jus a few hrs ago....but whatever. this is all temporary. and hey, it is a privilege to know i'm being moulded into being more christ-like every day thru these pains.

and god has been great to me....i mean, it hurts to take up my cross n lose everything i love in this world, but it was never relly mine in the first place to lose anyway. cos over these past few days, the sacrifices i've had to make, to lose this life....they've started to resurface again. and it pains me everytime i've stuck to my guns and said no to these treasures of the world when they've appeared. i dun even noe how i do it, but i jus do it....i believe it's the Spirit leading me....but then i feel sorta bad after that...cos i'm struggling to keep my focus on god n not on what i jus lost.

today i was at borders, jus going thru the books aimlessly when i spotted clay aiken's autobiography lying on where it shouldn't have been lying on....on a bunch of calendars....n of cos, me being a clay aiken fan, started flipping thru. n clay of cos, being a jesus freak, wrote about his whole life in connection to god, n so the first lift quote that i came across was....wow....it was what i needed to hear.

Exodus 14: 14 -- "The LORD will fight for you. You need only to be still."

whoa. i didn't even know that was in the bible...or mebbe i knew but i forgot about it.

i've been listening back to dc talk again...n i'm falling in love with their songs again...cos i remember the emotions i felt as i went thru the songs....n they're part of what's been bringing me back to god. n as always, i'm seeing new truths to their songs again after re-listening to them. somehow there's always something new to learn or pick up from in ccm songs....n that's the beauty of that....the hidden wisdom, if u read between the lines, if the Spirit opens ur eyes n makes u receptive to certain words.

and as usual, the complimentary song that is relevant to my current situation.....i wud've put dc talk up, but since switchfoot is all i can hear in my ears now that i'm playing it, here's one of their songs from their first album. pretty good effort for a debut album.

LIFE AND LOVE AND WHY
by Switchfoot

Life and love and why
Child, adult, then die
All of your hoping and
All of your searching
For what?

Ask me for what am I
Living or what gives
me strength
That I'm willing to die for?

Take away from me
This monstrosity
'Cause my futile thinking's
Not gonna solve
Nothing tonight

Ask me for what am I
Living or what gives
me strength
That I'm willing to die for

Could it be this?
Could this be bliss?
Could it be all that I
Ever had missed?

Could it be true?
Can life be new?
And can I be used?
Can I be used?

Give me a reason for life
And for death
And a reason for
Drowning while I hold
My breath

Something to laugh at,
a reason to cry
With everyone hopeless
And hoping for something
To hope for
Yeah, with something
To hope for

Could it be true?
Can life be new?
Could it be all that I am
Is in You?

Could it be this?
Could it be bliss?
Can it be You?
Can it be You?
